Sandra
began studying Middle Eastern Belly Dance in 1994 while a
student at the University in Berkeley, California. She performed
for two years with troupe Tabu, under the direction of her
instructor, Nanna Candelaria, who continues to be a strong
influence on her career.
Sandra
enriches her interpretation of bellydance by studying other
styles of dance. In 1995, Sandra traveled to Morelia, Mexico
to spend six months studying Flamenco intensively with Maestro
Alfredo at the studio of D.A.E. (Danses Arabes y Flamenco)
and sharing her knowledge of bellydance with students and
instructors at the studio.
After
graduating from Berkeley and living abroad for a year, Sandra
returned to the Bay Area to pursue a Masters degree from Stanford
University, and continue studying dance. Sandra currently
has the privilege of studying Middle Eastern, Persian and
Central Asian dance with Lorna Zilba in San Francisco and
maintains her long-time interest in Classical Indian dance
by studying and performing with Shreelata
Suresh's Vishwa Shanthi school of Bharatha Natyam.
Over
the course of her career, Sandra has performed regularly in
many clubs and restaurants throughout the San Francisco bay
area. She is currently the featured dancer at Aziza
in San Francisco and Chatanoga in Sunnyvale. She also offers
ongoing classes in Middle Eastern
Dance at the Mid-Peninsula YWCA in Palo Alto.
